Vietnam Bans Use of Phrase China Beach on Tourist Web Sites

VNExpress is reporting that Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communication has banned local tourist websites from using the phrase “China Beach” to describe the Da Nang Coastline.

The phrase China Beach was originally used to describe My Khe beach in Da Nang which was a popular with American soldiers on R&R during the Vietnam America war.

The article says that several local websites have already updated their English pages, however many had not. Authorities are also concerned about foreign sites however the Minister Do Quy Doan says on this point they have no control.

The article goes on to say:

Nguyen Van Tuan, head of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, said he planned to send a statement to municipal and provincial tourism authorities, international tour operators, and hotels from three to five stars, demanding that they refer to Da Nang’s beaches by their Vietnamese names.

“To describe Da Nang’s beaches as “China Beach” is unacceptable,” Tuan said. “It creates a misunderstanding about some of Vietnam’s most beautiful beaches.”
