This morning at my relatives house in Vinh Long I launched Facebook via my Wi-Fi connected iPhone 4 and to my surprise my Facebook profile loaded up, straight away I re-confirmed this on my iPad and Laptop with the same result. Could have the trip which Mark Zuckerberg’s took to Vietnam over Christmas and meetings with the Vietnamese Government have paid off!
Maybe maybe not, I have seen in the past where Facebook has been temporarily unblocked only to find it blocked again days or weeks later. One can only hope for the sake of Vietnam and the International tourists that want to share their great experiences in Vietnam see Putting Free WiFi to Good Use by Tim Russell from Come and Go Vietnam on why it’s in the best interest of Vietnam for Facebook to be unblocked
The house we are staying at have their internet with VNPT one of Vietnam’s largest telephone and Internet providers so we can only live in hope, I still have an SSH tunnel option to one of my servers in the USA or Australia if it is blocked again, but unfortunately most tourists don’t have this option.
It would be great if Can anyone confirm this finding, if so which ISP are you with?
Update 2 March 2012: it seems I spoke too soon, only a few hours after writing this post I found that facebook was again blocked, and unblocked a little latter only to be blocked again, and then unblocked again this morning. its very strange and the first time I have seen this happen which is why I am thingking it will be sooner rather than later before Facebook is unblocked in Vietnam
Update November 2012: Seems like the the VNPT office has told my father in law that they can unblock Facebook for a monthly fee, very interesting!
