The BBCs Carmen Roberts has reported that Ha Long Bay is now a lot safer following efforts from local authorities as well as Ha Long Bay cruise operators.
Initiatives implemented in Ha Long bay have included increased safety training for cruise operators and captains as well as stricter safety rules and guidelines and the introduction of improved safety equipment on board boats, for instance Ha Long Bay’s cruise boats are now well-equipped with rescue facilities, such as life jackets, life boats, underwater lights and hammers in case of emergencies.
These safety initiatives have been implemented since a cruise boat sinking a year ago in which 12 tourists died, the BBC feature shows outlines the safety initiatives that have been put in place since the sinking
In recent months, the number of foreign arrivals has increased sharply. The local Department for Culture, Sports and Tourism said Ha Long Bay, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, welcomed more than 337,000 tourists in January 2012, up 14 precent compared to the same month of last year.
